12.17.99 By Mark Griffith Hedman Headers for a 73 302 manual steering: (Remember that the headers I'm using worked for a 73 302 manual steering with a floor shifter. Also, I have not hooked up the emergency brake and suspect I will have to move the brackets for it) I called JEG'S tech support (1-800-345-4545 or www.jegs.com) and told them what I needed and about a week later I had a set of Hedman Headers that fit perfect. Putting them on was pretty easy because I already had the steering box, spark plugs and the emergency cable off. Putting the passenger side on was no problem. When I put on the drivers side header, I had to un-bolt the drivers side motor mount and jack the engine up about 2 inches. After the headers was on then I installed the steering box and the spark plugs. Then I bought a cheap set of mufflers that bolted right on and added a 10 inch pipe that was turned down until I got the money to put on a galvanized dual exhaust system out the back.
The above pictures show the drivers side header. You can see how close the header is to the Steering Box. I had to beat the header slightly to keep it from rubbing the Steering Box.
The above pictures show the passenger side header. Comments from other Maverick/Comet owners. 1) I saw you have tech articals on mavericks.I'm writing because I own one with a 289 w/351W heads,c4.I work for a speed shop in Pa. and have some luxery in trying defferent parts on my car.The best fitting header out there that I have found are from a co. called Flowtech.I had purchased a set 2 weeks ago when I had my trans. out it was the perfect time to do the headers. The headers fit w/o mods.I did not have to lift the motor up at all. They slid in from underneath in 10 min. I had both headers on w/ 2 bolts on each. Also mine does have p.s. so I did have to get the lowering bracket for it.The part# is 12100.Thanks Andy.
