Yea, the dumb asses that did the floor pans and installed the cage did a HORRIBLE job, that cage wouldn't have given me any protection in an accident. I wasn't doing my own stuff back then, now it will be done properly. 14-point roll cage, new floor pans, new subframe connectors, new wiring harness/wiring, new motor. That's all, not much....

well,... as long as your doing your own now,...no more cussing out the "dumbshit" that did it huh? :P

doing your own make take a little longer, but at least ya know it will be done right. hard to find places that will do good work that you can trust(and afford)

hey Stephen, I've got new floorpans for a mustang still in the box, you want them?-I took one out to test fit and give it the ole' eyeball, and it looks like it would fit perfectly except for a little bump at the transition from floorboard to tranny tunnel.

Wow...I didn't know you were doing so much work on the ol' Comet this winter! Sometimes in the depths of a winter project it seems like it will never get done...but it is so satisfying once it is!
I haven't done crap yet...but I am getting pretty fired up about a couple new ideas I've got for the Mav. Now, just to get going on it...:)

Looks like your floorpans are turning out pretty good. The only place I used a donor pan was the drivers front and I cut out a bit too much of the old pan and had to fill in some gaps. :banghead:

The hardest part was getting out the sheetmetal patches that the "other" guys had put in. The passenger side was a major PIA, you can see how big that patch will be.....i'm hoping when i'm done that people will have a hard time noticing that they are there......it's not a show car but I want it to be solid!!

Say, that's a nice shifter hump... you don't need that with a cable shifter, why don't you let me have that? (JK, I don't really need it. I bet it would make shifter placement in the Grabber take half the time though. :P)

Shifter hump?? Is that the part that bolts to the trans tunnel?? Yea, Tom told me that his pre-74 cars didn't have that....I guess that's a nice feature when you use a stock shifter?? I never really remember having any problems getting the stock one out.....

Made a depressing discovery this past weekend, the morons that I took the car to years ago just tack welded a piece of metal over this spot without doing any repairs.

This is from years of rain dripping in around the windshield. Instead of telling me about it and making a decision a few years back, you can see where they had just covered it up. I guess they figured that I would never find out about it.:cuss::banghead:

The good news is that it is totally fixable and the torque box is in good shape. Just increases the time before I am finished!!

That looks like the firewall transition in the Grabber when I was done cutting rotted metal out. I coated it with cold galvanizing compound and welded in a new piece.

You're right Matt, 5-axis CNC porting. They have 2.185 Xceldyne Titanium intake valves and 1.625 Ferrea Inconel exhaust valves, titanium retainers/keepers. Jesel 1.8 shaft rockers. They should do well.

Yes, they are Edelbrock Victor #7721 heads. The CNC program is owned by Advanced Airflow Engineering. The 5-axis CNC work was done by Carl Foltz Engineering and Advanced Airflow did the blending and assembly. The heads are at Wilson Manifolds righ now, they are "preparing" the intake manifold and must have the cylinder heads.

Yep, still have the Talon to play with.....we're taking it to Bristol today.....gonna stretch its legs out.

Actually, since I obtained sponsorship, the motor will be together much sooner. The only thing that I am waiting on is Ross to make the pisons and Wilson to finish the intake manifold. Should have the car together by July or August. However, i'm going for a 25.5 SFI spec. cage....sooooo....it may drag out a little longer than expected. From what I understand, there will be ALOT of bars required....I get my spec book next week, so we'll see....

P.S. That is a Dart 9.5 Iron Eagle block.

Also got the carburetor taken apart and upgraded to 1025 cfm+ and made a few changes to help if flow a bit more....

Message created at 07/18/07 10:32 AM
#93 cometgt1974 Re:Sad times for the comet......
Acutally it's not, it's a plate system and that estimate of 1200hp is based on a 300-400 shot of N2O. So that means i'm estimating that it will make around 800 on the motor.

Oh, and I actually plan on using the nitrous system....not just estimate what it will do.

Not sure what I did to you for you to be a dick towards me.

I have less than 500 miles on an engine I spent way too much on just to go out and throw a ton of NOS to just to say I did it. Your desktop dyno says your making 700 with a 250 shot of NOS yet you don't think mine with 500 shot could be 900. You really don't make any sense.
Message created at 07/18/07 07:31 PM
#96 cometgt1974 Re:Sad times for the comet......
So what's the point of having the n2o on there if you're not gonna use it?? Show car??

By the way, I don't use desktop dyno to get my numbers....I use track times. I also don't go around telling people that my motor makes 900 hp because i've got the 500 shot pills in the fogger......but oh yeah, I've never used it.

That's what I call a dick.

Maybe a boss 429 type scoop? Its the closest thing there is to what you `ve got but with more clearance.

So it would still look "kinda" like a comet GT scoop.

I'm kinda "on the fence" about that....it's a big investment for me to get it and then it not have enough clearance. I did find a guy locally that would make a mold of my hood for $600 and then make a carbon fiber hood for an additional $600. I'm not sure what direction I want to go.

yeah go ahead and do that if you want. i'll wait on you... but like i said if your bud can do it for 1200 id do it then there would at least be another choice for a hood with a bit more clearance. there have been a few asking about 4 & 5 inch cowl hoods

I thought I would pull a "Chris" and make a post about progress but not include any pictures. I've gotten the new fuel cell mounted, both fuel pumps are mounted and the lines are run, i've started installing the new wiring harness, most of the wires are run and just need to be terminated. The fire system is installed and the parachute release is installed. Still haven't found time to assemble the motor, however I am about half way finished checking all the tolerances. Currently checking piston to wall clearance.

I imagine there will be another learning curve since i've changed the complete front suspension design and changed shocks in the rear. I also made a few other changes to the rear that should help in the end. The wiring was the biggest pain in the a**. I re-wired all the stock stuff through the stock switches, major headache. The data acquisition system has about a thousand wires and sensors:rolleyes:

Here's one of the latest accomplishments......my first fogger install, but I think it turned out pretty good....still have a long ways to go on welding aluminum but it'll do. This intake will have two nitrous stages, with the option of 3 stages. The plate is a two stage Wilson Manifolds plate but i'll be using it as one stage and the fogger is one stage. The fogger kit consists of Edelbrocks E3 Titanium Nozzles and I did all the installation. I've got all the tools to do this stuff, so if anyone needs any help just let me know.

Matt, it's a 2nd Generation Talon, still AWD (for now) , it has a GT35R turbo and we're running the DSM Link to control the fuel/air. I don't do the tuning, I just do the fabrication on the Talon. I'm currently putting a ford 9" solid rear axle, w/ 4-link and coil overs but keeping the stock rear frame rails. I only know of one other Talon with a similar rear end setup. If he wants to know anything else, let me know. Also, what's the link to his site?

Not good, broke the input shaft on the transmission on the first pass. I made it to about half track. 60' and 330' times look promising. Back to the track tonight, it was 50 deg. out so the track was junk and I knew it would be but have to take advantage of these test and tune sessions as the first race is march 26. I had a mild tune up in the car so as not to hurt anything, since this was the first nitrous passes. First pass, I clicked it off at half track and coasted to a 5.85 @ 99 mph. The plugs looked clean so we headed back for another. The car went a little left on the launch and then settled down, it broke traction about half track and I had to lift for a split second and then got back into it and it ran a 5.56 @ 117. I decided that the track was too risky to make anymore passes so we loaded her up and headed home. These results are promising and I look forward to the next test/tune session when I can really start "tuning" and ride down a decent track.

Message created at 03/06/11 07:53 PM
#201 cometgt1974 RE: Sad times for the comet......
It's flaring on the 2-3 shift pretty badly....900 rpm flare on the data logger. It's either a problem in the clutch pack, timing in the valve body, release issue w/ the servo or a combination of all three. I've got a different valve body that i'm gonna try first, and i'm gonna tighten up the band a little bit. If that doesn't fix it, i'm gonna pull it out and see what I can figure out.

Yes, t-brake v-body, one is a JPT and the other is a Performance Automatic Pro 4.0. I'm gonna pump it up to 225 psi and see if it helps. The JPT runs at 195, i'm gonna put in the PA and see what the pressure is and go from there. Maybe the shift timing will be better w/ the PA.

OK, so far i've made 5 consecutive 5.50 passes w/ no transmission problems. Now i'm fighting some suspension issues but things are progressing. Sixty foot times are not what they need to be and I think it will take some time to get them sorted out. The car is heavy at 3170 lbs. w/ me in it and the class allows me to be at 2950. I will be putting the car on a small diet in the immediate future and a large diet this winter.

I got them from either Tim Mcamis race cars or Jerry Bickel race cars, can't remember which one.

Thanks John, I've not had much time to work on the comet been busy with other peoples cars. Did mini-tub a 63 nova recently...i'll try to dig up some pics. Also, I got a cheap lathe/mill/drill machine and i've been making some parts for some "special" traction bars.

Hey nutt, sorry I missed this. The tire is a 28x10.5 (Part # 3055) The tread measures 10". All the cars in the class run a 12" rim w/ beadlocks. I have had the parts to do the mini-tub for some time but never got around to doing it. Now I am making the time to do it, however, customers cars are hindering my progress.

I found time to build the rear-end and get it powder coated. The sheetmetal kit is from RJ race cars and the powder is black chrome. I hope I can find time to put it in the car soon.
